Client (GUI) does not start on Ubuntu 18.04

Beginning with Ubuntu 17.10 and now on 18.04 the owncloud client does not start. When clicking on the application or starting from cmdline, nothing happens. No error message, nothing, it just does not show up on the screen. But when I try it again using the cmdline (> owncloud &) a message appears:

gui.application: Already running, exiting…

But it does not run, no sync happens.

The command line utility owncloud-cmd is working. Also, the clients on my other machines (Windows) are working well.

Desktop Client Version is

libowncloudsync0:amd64 2.4.1+dfsg-1
owncloud-client 2.4.1+dfsg-1
owncloud-client-cmd 2.4.1+dfsg-1
owncloud-client-doc 2.4.1+dfsg-1
owncloud-client-l10n 2.4.1+dfsg-1

I have always keeping the OS up-to-date from official repos.

I’m not using desktop client, but I’m sure it writes a logfile somewhere.

Yes, but it has nothing to say:

Hey, in the Changelog of the upcoming 2.5.0 release i have found the following entry below. Maybe this could include a fix for your seen issue?

Linux: More tray workarounds (#6545)

And how I am able to use the upcoming version 2.5.0?

Hey, have you tried to click on one of the first two links to see the available download options for this testing versions of this upcoming release?

I think an alternative could be to wait for the final release of 2.5.0.

No, I tried only the third link, but now I can see the options. I will give it a try but I fear I need to update this manually then, do I?

Even though I appreciate much the answers, waiting for an upcoming fnal release just in hope it will fix the problem is not a good solution because I need it working now. And still I am asking myself about the root of these recurring problems. The dropbox client on the same machine just works out of the box, also with nice icons on files and folders which I do not see at my owncloud synced files and folders. Still I am reluctant to use dropbox as a replacement for my own owncloud server but it keeps me wondering. And I dislike the hassle around these kind of problems every several weeks or months only because I am one of these guys who still are in favour of a linux desktop instead of Windows. But this is beyond the scope of this issue of course…

Here is the result of trying the 2.5.0 client: At first, the same error appears again, i.e. no real error, the client just not start. When I startet it from cmd line, there were complains about lock files. Hence, I deleted all lock files in .config/owncloud. After that, the client starts, desktop application shows up and the tray icon is there.
