Moving SMB Shares on ownCloud 7

Hey everyone,

I am currently running ownCloud 7 on a VM and have all of the files defined as external storage via a SMB share. The data is on a Windows SBS 2011 server which I will be retiring soon. The plan is to copy all of the data from the SBS 2011 server to another SMB share on a Qnap NAS, but we don’t want to lose any of the current shares for users and some links (we have quite a lot). What would be the best way to move this data without having to reconfigure all of the shared links and folders?

First, ownCloud 7 is quite old, and only ownCloud 10 is still supported.

I think what you have to do is make sure that the data seems completely the same to the ownCloud installation:

  • same connection string (hostname or IP, depending on what you’re currently using) for external storage connection
  • same path inside external storage for every single file
  • same file metadata (mtime, usage rights, …) for every single file

Not sure if I missed something, but I would recommend you set up a test and try it out. Would be cool if you could let us know how it goes
