Presentation of pictures

I was a user of nextcloud untill the nextcloud client started randomly deleting my files!

I’m moving to owncloud now, but I was wondering if there is some presentation of pictures possible like this:

In nextcloud there was also a possibility to pregenerate the previews used for instance in the app. Now if you open the owncloud app he starts generating this previews, but it would be nice if they could be generated beforehand.

Thank you in advance for helping me out!

Hello @Matthias1,

well there was, but since the dropping of the gallery app to mediaviewer, there is not.
We are still waiting for the feature to be re-added.
About the pregeneration of the previews, I’d love that too, but as far as I know it’s not implemented. Nevertheless it would be such a cool improvement for the users of the web interface.
Well, hopes !

And for the app users too. I used to store all my files on nextcloud and could browse them on my phone (just like google photo’s actualy)

I hadn’t thought of it, in my case I don’t feel it so slow on the Android app, perhaps there is some more caching on the mobile.
Anyway, it would be nice to just set on a cron on the server side to create the previews. Btw I believe they are generated each time a user is browsing, which means you don’t get to use the first users’ time to browse faster as an other user.

I think they are only generated as soon as you open the specific picture folder. But once they are generated they are there forever so if you go to the folder a second time you don’t have to wait again.

What I also noticed in the mobile app is that the thumbnails you see when browsing are ‘downscaled’ pictures. If you want to view a picture fullscreen on your mobile it immediately starts downloading this image. In nextcloud you had also some lower quality previews for the full screen images.

It seems you’re right. I’ll have to dig into it since I don’t seem to have my cached thumbnails fast enough. Also, this cache is not shared across users.

You can define the sizes, it’s a bit further in the config sample.

It seems like this nextcloud app should maybe work for owncloud: https://github.com/rullzer/previewgenerator

The only thing the app does is scanning the data folder for pictures and creating thumbnails/previews in a separate folder.

I’m not sure how this works for shared pictures.

It seems nice though it doesn’t work with encryption, I don’t know how well it integrates with ownCloud and it seems to crash. I wouldn’t use it in production, but for tests and only for me, why not.

Indeed, it does not work with encryption on the server. About the crashes: in nextcloud this never happened to me and I’ve used it for two years now.

I think it should be possible to install the old gallery app instead of the new files_mediaviewer if you absolutely require gallery view straight away.

Give it a go, and let us know here if you’re running into any trouble.

In the meantime, if you have a github account, you can also add another comment to the issue @cs35 posted earlier, hopefully bringing some traction to this feature request:
