Not sure whatā€™s happening here. A few months ago I patched this owncloud from Version 8.x to 10.0.X, (in multiple steps, according to the upgrade guide) and just today i updated it to 10.0.10 and the clients to 2.5.0.
Suddenly the clients report this error message.

My guess is that this problem existed before, but the mentioned server version 8.1.9.2 just ran out of support with the latest client update.
So basically my owncloud-server seems to be confused about its version numberā€¦
Any idea where the problematic version string might be located that is used by the clients to test the version?

Thanks!

Hey,

from what i know the client gets the version which is provided by the server at the following URL:

https://example.com/status.php
https://example.com/owncloud/status.php
(or similar)

If you get the message that the server is running 8.1.9 then could it be possible that you have two different installations / servers where one was upgraded to 10.0 but the other (which is still at 8.1.9) is used by the client instead?

Thanks for your response. My status.php:

{"installed":true,"maintenance":false,"needsDbUpgrade":false,"version":"10.0.10.4","versionstring":"10.0.10","edition":"Community","productname":"ownCloud"}

I definitely only have one owncloud installation at /var/www/owncloud. I checked MariaDB, theres only one owncloud database, so pretty sure only one owncloud running.

Iā€™m really confused. Any other ideas? Maybe a bug in the new client version? I couldnā€™t find similiar reports.

Hey,

this looks indeed strange. From what i know the client provides some log windows where it could provide additional info where the older 8.1.9 version is coming from?

Nope, already looked for additonal information.
But good news: Right now I canā€™t reproduce it anymore. I tried with about 5 users who all showed the error message after starting the client - not anymore.

Maybe this was a caching issue with our gateway and manually loading the status.php in my webbrowser refreshed it. I have no other explanation.
If anything changes I will update this post again.
Thanks for your help!

Thought Iā€™d post here saying Iā€™m having the same issues. My client (on Windows 10) just updated to version ā€¦I canā€™t find a version number anywhere in the client.

My server is running the newest 9 release (I checked today). The status page reports:
{ā€œinstalledā€:true,ā€œmaintenanceā€:false,ā€œversionā€:ā€œ9.1.8.2ā€,ā€œversionstringā€:ā€œ9.1.8ā€,ā€œeditionā€:""}

The error message shown in the client is:

ā€œconnected to as . The server version 9.1.8.2 is unsupported! proceed at your own riskā€

On my Mac, Iā€™m runnign the client 2.4.3 (build 10347) and not having any issues.

Iā€™m starting the post here just in case it is related. If you guys think this is completely different, let me know and Iā€™ll start a new thread.

Nevermind. Iā€™ve done some more reading where I came across this: Desktop Client reports ā€œServer Version 9.1.4.2 is unsupported!ā€

That led me here: https://github.com/owncloud/core/wiki/Maintenance-and-Release-Schedule

I guess I need to upgrade to 10. #Sighā€¦time to upgrade PHP I guess.

Iā€™ll leave the post here but with the page at https://owncloud.org/download/#owncloud-server-tar-ball to clarify that the 9.1.8 version is EOL. The way it is presented there is that one is perfectly ok staying on the 9 branch.

Hey,

this looks indeed strange. Iā€™m not sure who is maintaining this page but i donā€™t think that you will reach the responsible person here.

Maybe there is a bug tracker for the owncloud.org page somewhere at github where this could be reported?

Well, I think you can stay here for that.

IMHO, the problem here is, staying on an older version of the server but running the newest one on the client. That this doesnā€™t fit well, is no surprise. There might be reasons for not upgrading the server, but then you should select a suitable version of the client.

Just my 2 cent.

Thanks everyone for noting this  Iā€™m taking care that it is changed to something more fitting than ā€œproductionā€. It is indeed misleading.
