Absolute Noob Here

Hello all…

First a brief introduction… I will admit I am a noob to owncloud. As in, I want to degoogle my life and started researching ways to replace Google Drive. After reviewing system requirements, this was the ONLY server that would meet my needs and work with my hardware. So, I downloaded it, followed a YouTube Video and got it setup and running with everything at default. Now, I am beyond what I can do alone.

I have a basic understanding of Ubuntu and Debian. I can manage with SSH using putty. I have a passing familiarity with sudo. However, I am NO expert in Linux.

I started on computers in the 1980s with MS-DOS so I am comfortable with command line. In fact, I still prefer command line over GUI.

Now, here is where I need help…

As I said, I am looking to replace Google Drive.

I have a NAS running Rockstor. I am able to create Samba/CIFS shares and make them accessible to my other servers. In fact, I have an SMB share for my media that I mapped in Emby to run a media server. I also created an NFS share, on the same Rockstor server, that my Proxmox uses to back up to. Now, I am wanting to create a share for use as a google drive replacement. At the moment, it needs to replace my google drive and that of my wife. So, there needs to be 2 users, each with their own private storage, and they also need access to the files on my media storage.

Here is where I need input and guidance;

I think to accomplish what I am wanting, I need to create ONE share called “owncloud” on my NAS. From there, Owncloud will create the seperate storage for each user within that one share. However, I am not sure if that is correct or do I need to create 2 separate shares… one for me and one for my wife… and have OwnCloud manage the 2 separate shares… one for each user? The goal is that my wife and I each have private storage as well as shared storage like we do on Google Drive.

Please feel free to provide any input (even if that is a link to a reference manual) and call me stupid for not finding the manual before reaching out. I want to get this up an running in the simplest, fastest manner I can. So, while I am reading manuals as I go, I find asking people who know more my best way of learning. That said, I know hand holding is not popular on these boards, so I appreciate what I can get of being pointed in the right direction and kicks in the butt when I go the wrong way. I will engage in trial an error, as I go. I will screw things up and need help figuring out where I screwed up.

Thanks for all the input, help, and cursing out I will get
Mike

Well, I have learned one thing about Owncloud

Don’t use it because it’s support sucks.

It took a WEEK to get my post aproved. Then, once aproved, it’s been up 3 whole days and not ONE reply from the community. God for bit I have a critical issue that needed support.

I have reached out to 4 other cloud communities about their systems and, while not all of them will work for me, I at least got some kind of responce within 24 hours. So, thanks, but no thanks. Only thing I will do for Owncloud is tell everyone I know to avoid you like the plague.

Please remove me from your system. I am done.

Hi Mike,

It’s great to see your enthusiasm for degoogling and setting up OwnCloud! Your approach to using a single “owncloud” share and letting OwnCloud manage user directories sounds like a practical and scalable solution. However, if strict separation of storage is a priority, two separate shares might provide better control. You might also want to explore OwnCloud’s external storage integration for better flexibility with your NAS setup. Keep experimenting, and don’t hesitate to ask more questions—learning by doing is the best way forward!
