Hello everyone! We are pleased to introduce you a new beta version of the ownCloud App for Android devices.
This new release comes with many changes. Some of them are pretty important, so we encourage you to test it and send us your feedback!
This beta includes some visual improvements and new features, but the most important change is related to network handling. So, it would be very helpful for us if you test everything related to the server connections.
Here comes the most important change in this version. The way in which server connections are validated has changed, and now, the secure connections are default ones. That means, when a server is connected, “https” is default. If the server is non-secure (http), user must type the http:// prefix.
This (and the underlying logic) could affect in case your server has any different set-up (proxys, redirections…). That’s why we put special emphasis on this improvement as several things have changed and as you will understand, our app would not be the same if the connections to your servers failed or did not work properly.
We are steadily thinking about how to improve the design of the application and make it more user-friendly, and sometimes the small details make the difference.
Android team decided to graphically improve two screens that had gone unnoticed. Our impression is thay the new look looks great!!.
The first one is the passcode screen. Until now we have been using the native tools provided by the Android platform to unlock our application, by offering us a generic system keyboard, not customizable breaking the graphic harmony that we always try to maintain.
Therefore we have decided to integrate a numeric keypad on the screen, giving it app colors and a nice animation when entering the passcode.
Finally, we could not forget about the unlock pattern. We have also updated it graphically. Improved navigation and graphical interface has been added to the existing view.
How many times have you wanted to see what’s new in each update from the application itself? Old update wizard, not very flexible with new features, has been replaced with a release notes view.
From now on it is possible, so that we have added a new view that will be displayed after every update (and from the settings view) where you will be informed of the latest improvements and new features that every update brings.
SVG files support has been added to preview such files as any regular image within the application.
Some improvements have been developed in details view to show information in a better structured manner. Also, the possibility to download or view a file from its own detail view has been added, just clicking on its thumbnail image for the action. This is a faster way to download and view.
This functionality was already implemented on Web and iOS. Therefore, it has been added on Android as well.Android app showed the hidden files by default. Now, you can decide whether showing or hiding. A new option in settings will allow the user to do that. By default it will be disabled.
Yes, we have included some more fixes and features. Read the whole Changelog here.
If you have detected any of these problems, please try them out and send us your feedback. Also, it will be helpful if you report us any other problem you detect in the beta version of the app.
If you want to join the beta program in PlayStore, you will need to have the last app version installed. If you already have the last version installed, go to the ownCloud app in PlayStore and scroll down to the end of the view; there you will see a new tab like the one below, just press the I’M IN button to join and your final app will be replaced with the beta one.
2.21 beta will be also available in F-Droid soon.
