Auto-display README.md in file/folder view (or similar)?

Does ownCloud support anything remotely similar to the GitHub feature where a folder’s README.md is automatically formatted inline to a folder view (at least in the web interface)?

I’ve a widely-shared folder whose users are reluctant to read the instructions before dumping badly-named chaos all over it, and am wondering whether they can be helped by putting the README in front of them on arrival…

Currently, there is no such feature.

However, I can imagine some easy app for your purpose. If there is a README.md file in a folder, you may open a pop-up with its content with an app similar to firstrunwizard app. Everything is possible if you are willing to spend time to develop an app for your needs.
