Change Background, logo

Hello,
I have installed 10.13.0 of the community edition. I want to change the background image and logo.
What is the easiest way to do this?

Is it enough only to change the images under owncloud/core/img/? The only disadvantage maybe is that after an update I have to change the images again.

Or do I need to create my own theme?

There is just one way to achieve this, create an own theme. There is a sample theme around for download, a good starting point.
