How to add new defined columns to lists of files?

To make users more aware of open file formats, validity, and if archives allow these file types, I (and a group of research supporting people) would like these things shown as extra columns for every list of files. But as we don’t have a magic wand (though we have some coding experience among us), we’re looking at part of the workflow where many files are first stored, and that for many of us and the thousands of researchers we support, is a websystem built on ownCloud.
