Insert Activity using API?

So I'm using the ShareAPI to create shares. Is there a way to log the share in the Activity log using the API as well (as is done with manual sharing)?

So you want to see who shares what on your server?

It should be listed even if you use the api.

The clients (mobile and desktop) are using this api and events are added to the activity view.

I'd expect this to work

I see actually that it is working from the perspective of the user that is doing the sharing, but I'm creating a public share not one linked to a particular user (shareType=3). Thank you for your assistance!
