There is already an app which uses an xmpp server:

Its not in the new marketplace. Is there another way to run a messenger app in ownCloud?

I can't find it in marketplace and GitHub either.

I suspect this wasn't popular enough.

It is still on github: https://github.com/jsxc/jsxc
The install page for owncloud is a bit dated (https://github.com/jsxc/jsxc/wiki/Install-ojsxc-(owncloud)) but you still find the app on the Nextlcoud app store (perhaps it is enough to modify appinfo/info.xmlto make it work on ownCloud). Or contact the developer to release a version for ownCloud (or ask if you can help to maintain a version for owncloud).
