My understanding is that there is no plan for ownCloud to ever support PHP8 or higher at this time.

Hi tom42, I can assure you that ownCloud 10.x (ownCloud Classic) will be with us for quite a while. In any case at least for another 3 years. As Botonic said, we are making ownCloud 10 fit for the future, for example with PHP 8 support. ownCloud 10 is currently the reliable product that the community and our customers trust in, and that will remain so for the time being.

Having used ownCloud since whatever version shipped in the Debian Squeeze repos, it’s always taken a while for ownCloud to move to newer PHP versions. That pace is why I actually moved to multi-php. It makes it a lot easier to not worry about ownCloud PHP version requirements when I can simply use the highest supported PHP version with my ownCloud instance without affecting other packages that may have different requirements.
