The ownCloud Appliance for Virtual Box is not working

I installed the ownCloud Appliance in a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 server on a Virtual Box. The install runs smoothly and as expected. I received the license in an email. I downloaded the license doc. I opened the browser. I typed in the given local IP. I get the http://10.0.0.23/univention/portal/. The Univention login returns " The connection to the Univention Management Console Server broke up unexpectedly". And the ownCloud login returns an error. I clicked the request for a new password via email. I never get an email.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Installed the Appliance on virtual box.
  2. Followed the instructions. Obtained the license and saved it in my download folder. Opened the browser to the specified ip. Uploaded the license doc successfully. I found the next screen http:// 10.0.0.23/ univention/ portal/
  3. Input the username "Administrator" and the chosen password. When that failed, I tried my email and password. That also failed. I tried the request for a link to a new password. I have not got an email. Yes, I checked the spam and junk folders. Yes, the email is working both send and receive to other accounts.

Expected behaviour

Open the owncloud.

Actual behaviour

I get an error saying my user name and or password is incorrect. Then I click on the send me a new password link. I don't get an email.

**Are you using external storage, if yes which one:** local/smb/sftp/...
Yes, an external hard drive plugged into the router, but it's not in any way connected to the Virtual Box installation.

**Are you using encryption:** yes/no
Yes, On the desktop, the boot install needs the encryption password prior to main boot and login password. Again, should have no effect on the Virtual Box or the ownCloud appliance.

No

10.0.3 looks quite outdated to me, maybe you can update that version to the recent 10.0.8 and try again?

Hi tom42, This is the latest version of the "Appliance" image made for an easy install on Virtual Box. Can you recommend a better package for install on a Virtual Box running the Ubuntu 18.04 server?

If i understand @dmitry correctly you can update the ownCloud app within that appliance: https://central.owncloud.org/t/update-from-10-0-1-to-10-0-7/13315/2

I found something "interesting". You can infer what you will when I say "interesting". I had ownCloud working well about a year ago. My home network set up had a router behind the ISP modem/router. Long story short, my ISP (the company ending in an A, and a T&T), came to replace their modem/router and ruined my home network setup. I got busy with a job and left the ownCloud for dead. And now for the "interesting" thing I just found.

As I have been searching for the fix for my login problem, I read a thread that implied that if you had an old version of ownCloud, you would have to use your old username and password on the new machine. So, I didn't really think that would be the case on a Virtual Box machine, but just for kicks, and to say I tried everything, I treid it, and WTF do you know, I am in.

Now that doesn't mean this issue is in any way solved. But at least I am in and can use the ownCloud.

Cool, thank you. I will update and report back.

The username and password for the appliance is owncloud

dmitry, Wow, thank you. I now can login as an admin, add my contact email, edit my profile, and change the user name and profile. In all the manuals and videos, no one ever said or wrote the first un and pw. Thanks again. Where did you find that info. I'd bet there is a lot more I will need to know that is not easy to find.

The update got me up to 10.0.4

Yep. That's the latest oc version for the Appliance.

10.0.7 and 10.0.8 should come soon.

I have another question, and maybe it belongs in a new topic, but here goes:

I set my router to reserve the IP for the Appliance (and my desktop as well just for good measure). Now I know that is not the same as having a static IP. I can make a static IP in the desktop (if need be), where the Virtual Box is running the ownCloud Appliance.

Q: Should I make a static IP in the ownCloud Appliance as well? If so, how?

Yeah, better new topic for new question
