Virtual File system going away?

Expected behavior

I should have an option to allow virtual files in 3 dots of account sync area.

Actual behaviour

After receiving a notice that virtual file support was depricated, I followed the instructions to disable virtual files after updating to mac client v6.x with owncloud 10.15.x. Now I see no virtual file support.

Steps to reproduce

  1. disable virtual file support in client v6.x

  2. then try to enable virtual file support in client v6.x

So I really relied on the virtual file system to keep track of what was on the server and free up local space.

After upgrading Mac client to v6.0.0.17092, I was presented with notice that virtual file support was going away and that I needed to take action or potentially loose my files.

Perlexity seemed to think it can be enabled again with native support, however, I’m not seeing native support for Virtual files.

Any idea on how to enable virtual file support to free up local storage?

I don’t follow that feature, but if it has been deprecated, it’s done. You will need to adapt to life without it.

Thanks. That is a shame. I have many users that relied on it.

For me the lack of this capability is a good reason to move on to another solution.

it’s time to explore other solutions.

Does infinite scale support virtual files to free up local storage?

I might be wrong, but I think a different vfs implementation is coming, with a better integration with the FS. The old vfs implementation (currently deprecated) will be replaced with the new one.

Maybe @DeepDiver1975 has more details.

It would be nice if there was an ETA if such a thing was in play.

Windows already offers a vfs implementation. If is planned to have one for MacOS as part of desktop client 7.1. Linux is currently not planned.

Oh, great, then my windows users are not SOL. Then only Mac users need to wait this out for desktop 7 to get the VFS feature back.

Thanks for chiming in here.
