What happened to the simple installation?

I have been using owncloud for some time now.
Since my last update, my page is locked on maintenance mode, message as follow:

This ownCloud instance is currently in maintenance mode, which may take a while.
This page will refresh itself when the ownCloud instance is available again.
Contact your system administrator if this message persists or appeared unexpectedly.
Thank you for your patience.

I can’t find a solution on how to fix this.
I am considering making a new folder, for a fresh installation, but this doesn’t seem as simple as I installed before, so so far I am unsuccessful x 2.
What happened to the simple installation?
if out of reach, can someone help in some starter points?

Thanks,

In case you mean the web-installer:

Thanks for the reply…

I had it for many years, and now with the last update it all got messed up.
Is there a way for me to easily install this on my hosting service?

I think, installing with FTP is still possible, but no longer supported. Try it, if it works, you’re fine. If not, consider to switch to a suitable hosting.

Thanks Alfred…I am a little lost.
I can’t fix the old installation, which is stuck on maintenance mode, and I can’t install a new one.

Can you point me out to the easiest way to install a new installation, and where to find the old web installer?

Hey,

i have done my installation by downloading the tar.bz2 file from owncloud.org, extracting it on my local system and uploading it to my webserver. Afterwards i was able to open the URL to the new installation in my browser and continue with the installation.

good to know, I will try that. Thanks!

I know that this was working in the past, successfully done several times. But how about the upgrades? Is this still working these days?

I’ll try this “upgrade w/o shell access” procedure within the next days.

From what i understand/have read in the past there are various different terms for this setup, installation and update topic:

  1. The “web setup” which was probably the “setup-owncloud.php” mentioned in Where ist the “setup-owncloud.php” file for version 10.0.6 (newest)? and which was removed according to Bye-bye web setup

  2. The “web installer/wizard” which is https://doc.owncloud.org/server/latest/admin_manual/installation/installation_wizard.html and which can be called by pointing your browser to the ownCloud URL after uploading the new ownCloud code.

  3. The “occ” command line installer which is https://doc.owncloud.org/server/latest/admin_manual/installation/command_line_installation.html

  4. The “web update” which is showing up if you point your browser to your ownCloud URL after you have uploaded the code of a new ownCloud version

  5. The “occ” command line update which is https://doc.owncloud.org/server/latest/admin_manual/maintenance/manual_upgrade.html#start-the-upgrade

  6. The “updater app” which is https://doc.owncloud.org/server/latest/admin_manual/maintenance/update.html

It seems to me this is a quite complex topic of various different terms. Personally i only had used points 2. and 5. and i’m happy so far with my installation.

This is what I meant in my previous post.

Huge thanks for that great summary! :+1:

I uploaded the unzipped folder and ran the index file, worked fine, thanks for the help.
the website is extremely unhelpful, maybe owncloud changed course?

still some features doesn’t work, can’t share files…updated to a 5.6 php…
