ownCloud 2.9 beta app for Android released

Hello everybody,

today we bring good news for all our testers, a new beta version of the ownCloud app for Android is already out, have a look at what we have prepared for you in this version.

Which features of 2.9.0 beta can I test?

The main change in this beta is the replacement of the network library, which was composed of deprecated/end-of-life Apache HttpClient 3.1 and Jackrabbit WebDAV libraries. After considering several options, we finally decided to use OkHttp, a more trustable, active and widely used library, developed by Square, the creators of other famous libraries like Retrofit.

Therefore, we will really appreciate the feedback regarding network operations so if you notice something weird when performing any operation such as uploads, downloads, creations, deletions and so on, please get in touch with us via one of the channels explained at the end of this topic.

In addition to this important change, we have included a couple of features highly demanded by our users; the first one is local search in current folder.

The second demanded feature is select all files and inverse selection , which will you save a lot of time by selecting many files at once. This is a contribution by @sd1998, thanks a lot!

Anything else to test?

Yes, our login view was not consistent with the most recent ownCloud versions, so we have updated it.

Besides, we are now showing re-shares, this is when a user A shares a file with a user B and user B shares that shared file with a user C, the user A will see the users B and C in the shares view for that file.

How can I join the beta program?

If you want to join the beta program in PlayStore, you will need to have the last app version installed. If you already have the last version installed, go to ownCloud app in PlayStore and scroll down to the end of the view; there you will see a new tab like the one below, just press the Iā€™M IN button to join and your final app will be replaced with the beta one.

2.9.0 beta is also available in F-Droid: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.owncloud.android/
