We will restructure the Central Categories after next week!

After we used the current Central category scheme for one and a half years now, it’s time for a rework again. You can look at the current scheme here: https://central.owncloud.org/categories

It has two major flaws:

  1. there are too many unused categories. This confuses new posters; they have to think about a fitting category before they post. having more than 20 categories and subcategories is intimidating them.
  2. there are too many subcategories; subcategories are not a very useful ordering tool, though. Tags are way better, because posts can have only one subcategory, but as many tags as the OP sees fit.

So @tom42, @karakayasemi, @alfredb, @dmitry, and me sat down to think about new categories.

We have the following proposal:

  1. News
  2. FAQ
  3. Server
  4. Desktop
  5. IOS
  6. Android
  7. Development (Tags: Client Development, oC internals, GSoC)
  8. Server-Apps (Tags: Marketplace, Themes, Services)
  9. Events
  10. Meta
  11. ownCloud.org
  12. Staff (hidden)

If no one objects in 7 days, we will implement the new structure. So if you need a specific category, just leave a comment, and we will respect your wishes.

Okay, done. We have a lot less categories now. I hope this helps you at finding your way through this jungle :smiley:
